Beautiful Handmade Rugs and Tapetes Made with Naturally Dyed Wool
Jacobo Mendoza and his family have been making tapetes (rugs) in Teotitlán del Valle, outside Oaxaca City, for generations. His son started weaving at age 5 with his own small loom, now he is studying law and is working on fine weaving techniques. His daughter studies and also produces very beautiful pieces. His wife makes very special rugs and tapestries.
His own weavings are inspired by pre-Hispanic buildings as well as contemporary creations.
Jacobo’s work has been recognized in Mexico and abroad, in 2014 he garnered third place in the 2nd National TEXTILES Competition. In the next two years he won first place in the 3rd and 4th National TEXTILES Competition. The recognition comes from the exquisite work using very fine techniques and use natural dyes from cochineal, blue indigo, walnut, pericón, among others.
At the end of 2018 he will be in San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, Mexico, showing his work at "CASA DE LA CUESTA". The date has not been finalized but those who wish to obtain more information please send him an email or a note.
